Breakfast and brunch in Cockermouth: something different

Shubha here from Dosa Chaska. If you’re looking for breakfast in Cockermouth town centre and fancy something other than a fry-up, here’s what a morning with us looks like.

Why a different breakfast?

Most mornings, the choice in a British town is toast, a bacon roll or a full English. I love a good café, but I wanted to offer something lighter that still keeps you going until lunch, made from scratch with nothing ultra-processed.

In South India, breakfast is often a dosa: a thin, crispy pancake made from rice and lentils that have been soaked, ground and left to ferment overnight. It’s filling without being heavy, and that’s exactly what we cook on Main Street.

What to order in the morning

Masala Omelette pancake (£12). If you want eggs, this is the one: a spiced omelette on a crispy pancake.

Vegan Lentil Sausage pancake (£12). Our answer to the breakfast sausage, made from lentils. Vegan as it comes, and very filling.

Potato Masala pancake (£10). The classic: golden pancake with gently spiced potato.

A mini meal (from £3). A small pancake with your coffee. A mini meal and a masala chai comes to £6.50, which is how lots of our regulars start the day.

Proper coffee and real chai

We serve americano, latte and cappuccino, but if you’ve never tried Mysuru filter coffee, made the South Indian way, have one with your breakfast. Our masala chai is properly spiced, and there’s house chai, matcha and hot chocolate too.

Brunch at the weekend

We’re open Wednesday to Sunday from 10:30, including Sundays when a lot of Main Street is quiet. Late morning at the weekend is a lovely time to share a few mini meals and a chat bowl with friends, or go big with a protein pancake.

Vegan, gluten-free and fussy eaters

Everything we make is vegetarian, and everything on our menu is gluten-free except cookies and samosas. Most pancakes can be made vegan: we just leave out the cheese or paneer. Tell our team what you need and they’ll happily adapt your food. If you have coeliac disease, please tell us when you order, because cookies and samosas are made in the same kitchen.
